The short answer

Built-in campaign sender, in one look.

Both send multi-step email sequences from your own connected mailboxes, with A/B variants, a schedule and stop-on-reply. Smartlead sells its sending by monthly email and contact allowance (Base $39: 6,000 emails; Prime $379: 500,000), rotates across unlimited mailboxes and adds manual task and call steps. Warmerly does not meter sends on paid plans, limits mailboxes by plan, puts LinkedIn steps and condition branches in the same sequence, ramps new mailboxes from 3 a day, scales a mailbox down as its bounce rate climbs, and runs a launch-readiness check before Start. Smartlead publishes more in its API docs on rotation and sending limits and says it has a high bounce rate auto-protection, but gives no threshold. Last checked 19 October 2026.

How fast a new mailbox gets to full volume

Emails per mailbox per day, over the first 20 sending days

WarmerlySmartlead

Emails per mailbox per day (vertical)Sending day (horizontal)

Warmerly can ramp a campaign's volume per mailbox: 3 a day on sending day 1, up 1 a day to a ceiling of 15, so full volume arrives on the 13th sending day. Weekends hold the cap flat, and the ramp never lifts a mailbox above its own limit (30 by default). Smartlead's help centre gives a single recommendation, 40 to 50 messages a day per mailbox including warm-ups, and describes no ramp for campaign sends. The band is a recommendation, not a schedule.

Smartlead

Auto-protection exists

Smartlead's campaign setup lists a high bounce rate auto-protection and domain-level rate limiting. No threshold, window or minimum sample is published, so we cannot draw one.

Warmerly also pauses a whole campaign at 7 per cent bounces or 30 per cent undeliverable leads, each after at least 25 sends, and emails the owner. The brake never takes a cap below 1 a day.

Arithmetic only: mailboxes x daily limit x sending days. Smartlead also counts contacts (Base 2,000, Pro 30,000), so a plan can run out of contacts before emails. A real campaign sends fewer, because of ramps, follow-up timing and lead limits. Prices read 19 October 2026 and change.

How Warmerly does it

Warmerly, in detail.

Sequences with email, wait, LinkedIn and condition steps, per-mailbox daily limits, a volume ramp, a graded bounce brake with a pause at 7 per cent, spam-flag slow-downs and a pre-launch readiness check. Sends are not metered on paid plans.

01

Sequences and branching

A sequence is made of email steps, wait steps, LinkedIn connection and message steps, and condition steps that branch on opened, clicked, replied or timeout, in a list editor or a drag-and-drop canvas (only the canvas can build branches). Templates include a plain three-step intro and a LinkedIn-then-email sequence.

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

02

Scheduling

Each campaign has sending days (Monday to Friday by default), an hour window (09:00 to 17:00 by default) and a timezone. A recipient-local window (08:00 to 17:00 by default) is evaluated in the lead's own timezone when it can be worked out from country and region.

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

03

Per-mailbox limits and pacing

Each mailbox has its own daily campaign limit, 30 by default. A campaign can add a volume ramp (3 emails per mailbox on day 1, rising by 1 a day to 15 by default), switched on automatically for young mailboxes. A reputation brake scales a mailbox down once its seven-day bounce rate passes 2 per cent, and a campaign pauses at 7 per cent bounces or 30 per cent undeliverable leads, each after at least 25 sends.

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

04

Pre-launch readiness check

A check runs before Start. Errors block the launch, such as no usable step, no sending account, no queued leads or an unknown merge tag. Warnings do not block, but Start refuses once until you acknowledge them, such as a sender whose DNS check is warn or fail, more than five senders on one domain, spam-style copy or no tracking domain for the unsubscribe link.

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

05

A/B variants, unsubscribes and replies

Any email step can run versions side by side. A winner is picked on genuine replies first and falls back to opens, and open tracking is off by default. Campaign emails carry List-Unsubscribe headers and a footer link, unsubscribes go on a workspace-wide suppression list, and a genuine reply stops the lead's sequence by default.

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

06

What is and is not capped

Sending is not metered on paid plans. The Free plan is capped at 100 campaign sends a month and 1 mailbox. Mailboxes are limited by plan (5, 25, 100) and leads per campaign are limited on Starter (2,500).

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

07

The ramp counts sending days

The default ramp is 3, 4, 5 and so on up to 15, reaching full volume on the 13th sending day. A day means a day in the campaign's sending days, so with Monday to Friday sending, weekends hold the cap flat. The ramp can only tighten a mailbox's own daily limit, never raise it.

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

08

A bounce brake before the pause

Below 2 per cent bounces over 7 days a mailbox is untouched. From 2 per cent its daily cap is multiplied by 0.75, from 3 per cent by 0.5 and from 5 per cent by 0.25. At 7 per cent the mailbox is paused instead. None of it applies under 25 sends, and the cap never goes below 1 a day.

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

09

Thirteen kinds of launch check

The readiness table lists 13 kinds of check, 7 that block (no usable step, plan gate, no sender, no queued leads, unknown merge tag, missing brief for an AI opener, failed AI provider probe) and 6 that warn (no postal address, thin lead research, DNS warn or fail or more than 5 senders on one domain, a free mailbox still waiting, no tracking domain for the unsubscribe link, spam-style copy). Warnings need one acknowledgement.

Warmerly product, checked 19 October 2026

10

Spam flags slow sending automatically

A sweep of what each mailbox and workspace sends to the outside world writes a send factor. A slow-band mailbox gets 0.5 and a pause-band one 0.25 at once; a slowed workspace gets 0.5 and a restricted one 0.1. The campaign engine applies it with no setting to turn on.

How Smartlead does it

Smartlead, in detail.

A cold-email sender built around mailbox rotation and per-mailbox limits, sold by monthly emails and contacts, with unlimited mailboxes, A/B variants, manual task and call steps, and a set of delivery protections whose thresholds are not published.

01

Plans are sized by emails and contacts

Base is $39 a month for 6,000 emails and 2,000 contacts, Pro is $94 for 90,000 emails and 30,000 contacts, Unlimited Smart is $174 for 150,000 emails and Unlimited Prime is $379 for 500,000 emails (monthly billing). The pricing page says all plans include unlimited email accounts. Contacts for the two Unlimited plans are not stated.

02

Sequences, schedule and rotation

The API docs list multi-step email sequences with timed follow-ups, a scheduler with sending times and a timezone field, automatic rotation between your connected email accounts, stop-on-reply settings and open and click tracking with a privacy mode.

api.smartlead.ai/core/campaigns · read 19 October 2026

03

Sending limits

The help centre says the mailbox-level 'Messages per day' setting can be changed, with a recommendation of 40 to 50 in total including cold emails and warm-ups. The campaign setting 'Max new leads sent per day' refers to new leads that receive their first email, and does not include follow-ups. The campaign send interval must be longer than the mailbox's minimum time gap.

04

Categories can trigger subsequences

The lead categories article says categories can be used as triggers for subsequences, for example a lead marked 'Requested info' is added to a 'Send more info' drip sequence automatically.

05

Clients and white label

The pricing FAQ says clients can be added from the Pro plan onwards, Unlimited Prime includes 3 clients or workspaces and 3 SmartServers, and white-labelling is an add-on at $29 a month per client workspace.

smartlead.ai/pricing · read 19 October 2026

06

Step types and A/B variants

The campaign setup help article lists three step types: Email, Manual Task and Call (SmartDialer users only). An email step takes a subject and body, wait times, and A/B variants for subject lines or body copy, with Write with AI, AI Spintax and templates. Variant distribution is Pattern-based (recommended) or Randomized and cannot be changed once the campaign is live.

07

Settings and protections

The same article lists stop-on-reply, clicks or opens, plain text mode, enhanced sending and delivery, switches to disable open and click tracking, a split of sending across Gmail, Outlook and Others, high bounce rate auto-protection, domain-level rate limiting, an unsubscribe message added to all emails, and webhooks. It gives no numbers for the bounce protection, windows or limits.

09

Matching leads to sender accounts

The API guide describes AI ESP Matching, which matches leads to sender accounts using the lead's email provider, account deliverability scores, sending patterns and historical performance, alongside rotation between connected accounts. It also lists a Follow-up Percentage setting and Min Time Between Emails.

What Smartlead does not say

We looked, and found no statement on these. That is about its published pages only, not about the product.

  • The numbers behind high bounce rate auto-protection and domain-level rate limiting: no threshold, window or minimum sample is published in the pages read.
  • Branching conditions inside a sequence beyond stop-on-reply, clicks or opens, and the call-step dispositions: none are described in the setup article.
  • LinkedIn steps: not among the step types listed (Email, Manual Task, Call) and not mentioned on the pricing or home page.
  • A ramp-up schedule for campaign sends: the help article on send limits gives only the 40 to 50 messages a day recommendation, warm-ups included.
  • Any spam-copy check inside the campaign sender. SmartDelivery's copy scoring is a separate add-on.

In practice

What it means for you.

Our reading of the facts above. Not a promise, and not the only reasonable reading.

1

Our reading: the two caps shape the bill

Smartlead's cost rises as you send more. Warmerly's rises as you add mailboxes, and each mailbox also has its own daily campaign limit. At the default of 30 a day, 5 mailboxes reach roughly 4,500 sends in a 30-day month unless you raise the limit, so high volume on few mailboxes needs a higher limit and healthy mailboxes.

2

Our reading: Smartlead is built for rotation at scale

Unlimited mailboxes, rotation, client workspaces and white label suit agencies running very large fleets. Warmerly's Agency plan covers up to 100 mailboxes with client workspaces.

3

Our reading: Warmerly leans on guard rails

The readiness check, ramp and reputation brake exist to stop a new mailbox sending too much too soon. They are guard rails some people find helpful and others find restrictive.

4

Our reading: Smartlead's launch check is short, ours is long

Smartlead names three checks. Warmerly has 13 kinds. More checks are not automatically better: some people want the guard rails and some find the acknowledgement step slows them down.

5

Our reading: neither product publishes a full recipe

Warmerly's brake and ramp numbers are in our own docs. Smartlead's bounce protection exists but has no published threshold, so test it on a small list before you rely on it.

6

Our reading: variants exist on both sides

Do not choose on A/B testing alone. Both can run subject or body versions. Smartlead lets you pick a pattern-based or random split, and Warmerly picks a winner on genuine replies before opens.
