# Do You Need MX Records on a Cold Email Sending Domain? What to point them at, how to check, and what fails without them. Yes. A cold email sending domain needs MX records so it can receive replies, bounce notices and warmup mail. The MX records point at whoever hosts the mailboxes, such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. Without them, replies fail, and you have no way to see that a send bounced. > **How this was checked**: The mail routing rules come from RFC 5321. Provider MX values are not listed here because they change; copy them from your provider's set-up screen. We make a free MX checker, linked below. ## What MX records do An MX record tells other mail servers where to deliver mail for your domain. If a domain has none, the standard says a sending server may fall back to the domain's address record, which almost never runs a mail server, so delivery fails. Replies to a cold email go to the From address, so they need working MX records at that domain. ## Set it up 1. Create the mailboxes at a mail provider. 2. Copy the MX records from the provider's set-up screen into your DNS. Keep the priority numbers the provider gives. 3. Remove any old MX records that point somewhere else, unless you mean to have a backup. 4. Check the result with an MX checker, and send yourself a test reply. ## Common mistakes - Mailboxes created, MX never published, so replies bounce. - Two providers' MX records mixed, so mail splits between them. - An MX record pointing at an IP address instead of a hostname. MX targets must be hostnames. - MX changed on a live domain without warning, so mail stops arriving during the switch. **Check your DNS** - [Free MX checker](https://warmerly.com/mx-checker) - [Free SPF record generator](https://warmerly.com/spf-record-generator) - [Cold email infrastructure setup](https://warmerly.com/blog/cold-email-infrastructure-setup) --- Source: https://warmerly.com/blog/mx-records-for-cold-email-sending-domain Full content index: https://warmerly.com/llms-full.txt Site index: https://warmerly.com/llms.txt
